ID, the booking, and your weight confirmed against what you declared. Ten minutes, and the only paperwork of the day.
Ten minutes with your instructor. Nine of them are one thing: head back, hips forward, arms out when tapped. That position is the whole technique.
Fitted and then checked. It will feel far too tight. That is correct — it is designed to be tight while hanging, not while standing.
Ten to fifteen minutes to altitude. Dubai shrinks, the Palm stops being a street and starts being a shape, and this is where people go quiet.
The genuinely hard four seconds. Cold air, a lot of noise, and every instinct you have objecting. Then your instructor rocks forward and it is decided for you.
It does not feel like falling. There is no reference point and nothing rushing past, so it feels like lying face down on a very strong wind.
The noise stops abruptly. This is the part nobody expects to enjoy most: quiet, slow, and Palm Jumeirah laid out underneath you.
Feet up, slide in. Then your photographs and video, already on a card with your name on it.
What people actually get wrong beforehand
No stomach drop, you can breathe, and the instructor is flying.
«The falling feeling will be horrible.» The stomach-drop sensation comes from acceleration relative to something fixed, like a rollercoaster track. In freefall there is nothing fixed and you reach terminal velocity in about ten seconds, after which nothing changes. Almost nobody reports the drop feeling at all.
«I will not be able to breathe.» You can. The wind is strong and it takes a conscious first breath, which is why instructors tell you to shout on exit — shouting forces one.
«I need to remember the technique.» On a tandem, your instructor flies. Your entire contribution is not going into a ball: head back, hips forward. If you forget, they will physically correct you.
