What to do in Dubai around an hour at the drop zone

A Skydive Dubai jump takes about an hour door to door and leaves you elated and slightly wobbly at ten in the morning. Everything worth doing afterwards is within a short drive of the Palm, and most of it is best done slowly.

Atlantis and Palm Jumeirah in Dubai

Quick answer

Jump first, then do the ground-level version of what you just saw. The drop zone is on Palm Jumeirah; so are the boardwalk, the beach clubs and Atlantis. Go up the Burj Khalifa in the afternoon and you will have seen Dubai from three heights in one day.

How to build the day around the jump

Morning, afternoon, evening

Jump, then stand on the island, then the tower — and the desert on a second day.

Morning: the jump. First slot, for the calm air and the clear view of the island. You are back on the ground by mid-morning with adrenaline still running and a set of photographs nobody at home is going to believe.

Late morning: stay on the Palm. The boardwalk, the beach, Atlantis. Standing on the thing you just fell towards is a genuinely strange and good feeling, and it costs nothing.

Afternoon: the Burj Khalifa, or the water. Going up 828 metres after exiting at four thousand puts the tower in an odd perspective, which is half the fun. If that is too much height for one day, the Marina and JBR are ten minutes away.

And on another day: the desert. A balloon at dawn or a safari in the afternoon. It is forty-five minutes inland and it is the other half of what this country looks like.

Six things worth the time

On the Palm and close to it

All of them are within reach of the drop zone.

  • The Palm boardwalk

A walking and cycling path along the crescent, with the skyline across the water. Free, and the best place to look back at where you landed.

  • Atlantis and the Aquaventure waterpark

At the top of the crescent, and the building you used as an orientation point from thirteen thousand feet.

  • The Burj Khalifa observation decks

828 metres, and a completely different kind of height from the one you had that morning.

  • Dubai Marina and JBR

Ten minutes from the Palm: towers, a beach and the easiest evening in the city.

  • The desert, on another day

Forty-five minutes inland. A balloon at dawn from $259, or a safari in the afternoon.

  • A helicopter over the same island

From $257. Seventeen minutes, doors shut, and a view of the Palm that is lower and calmer than the one you fell through.

Three heights in one Dubai day

And the order to do them in

A Skydive Dubai morning sets up everything that follows.

  • Thirteen thousand feet, before nine

The Skydive Dubai jump over the Palm. First slot, clearest air, and the whole island as one shape.

  • Sea level, late morning

The Palm boardwalk. Standing on the thing you fell towards, an hour after falling towards it.

  • 828 metres, afternoon

The Burj Khalifa. It feels modest after a Skydive Dubai exit, which is exactly what makes it interesting.

Do the jump first and the boardwalk second. Falling towards an island and then walking on it the same morning is the best sequence Dubai offers a visitor.

The best time to jump

Common questions

The city, answered plainly

What should I do after a Skydive Dubai jump?

Stay on the Palm. The boardwalk, the beach and Atlantis are minutes from the drop zone, and standing on the island you just fell towards is the best part of the afternoon.

Is the Burj Khalifa worth it after a skydive?

It is a completely different kind of height and most people enjoy the contrast. 828 metres feels modest after four thousand.

How long do I need in Dubai around a Skydive Dubai jump?

Three days covers the city and the Palm properly. Add a fourth if you want a desert morning as well.

Can I do the desert the same day as Skydive Dubai?

Not the balloon — that starts before dawn. An afternoon safari is possible but it is a long day after a jump.

When is the best time of year?

November to March for everything outdoors, including the jump.

Is Dubai walkable?

In parts. The Marina, JBR and the Palm boardwalk are; between districts you will want a taxi or the metro.
